Executive Summary

Large typhoons continuously landed in the west part of Japan in 2004. The typhoons caused the storm surges and waves in the wide areas spreading from the Okinawa to Hokkaido islands. The revetments, breakwaters and sea walls in the coasts and harbors suffered from the typhoons were heavily damaged mainly due to high tides and large waves. The paper describes the situation of facility damages derived from field survey. The mechanism of damages is discussed applying the
non-linear wave transformation model for the representative harbors.
