Executive Summary

Recently, it is pointed out that RC structures are deteriorated by chloride attack. Deterioration by chloride attack causes the corrosion of reinforcing bars and ultimately reduces load-bearing capacity of structures. Especially, the RC superstructure of wharves are located right above the sea level and it is thought that they are also prone to the damage by chloride included in seawater splash. Therefore, in order to use those wharf structures for long time in good condition, it is rather important to grasp the actual deterioration condition and to carry out the suitable maintenance works based upon the prediction of deterioration.
In this study, the result of field investigation of 25 wharves picked up from all over Japan, which is performed from 1997 to 2001,is summarized. Moreover, a model to represent a deterioration progress of wharves contributing to a rational maintenance strategy is proposed based on the result of field investigation.
