Executive Summary

The open spaces in the waterfronts aren't sufficiently designed considering the characteristics of being situated in the waterfronts. The purpose of this study is to clarify how to realize the amenities with unities between the cities and the waterfronts. Therefore we have analyzed the design and the composition of the open spaces situted between the sea and the facade of the cities, where the characteristics of spaces in the waterfronts appear the most clearly. We deal with the spaces mainly in the beach resort cities which seems to have been spontaneously developed with the waterfronts. We have picked up the design vocabularies, characteristics of the spaces, the scale indices, which are used at planning, designing and constructing the spaces and the typical types of the spaces categolized by the way of using them. And we have shown the principles of designing and composing the spaces, considering the meanings of the spaces for the cities. Lastly, we tried to estimate the amenities of a few of the famous spaces abutting on the sea and the facade of the cities in Japan.
