Executive Summary

Two types of block pavements are studied. The first is an interlocking block (ILB) pavement that incorporates an interlocking block layer over a base course, and the second is a tile pavement consisting of tiles adhered to a concrete slab. Both laboratory tests and field studies were conducted to develop the design proce
dures for ports and airports.
 The following findings were obtained.
1) The structurac design method of asphalt pavement will be applied to the ILB pavement after properly determining the structural equivalency factor of the ILB layer to the asphalt concrete layer.
2) Since the bonding strength between the tiles and the concrete slab is much lower than the strength between asphalt concrete layers, it is difficult to expect a structural value in the tiles in the tile pavement.
The design principle for these two pavement types hasbeen established based on these findings.
