Executive Summary

The purposes of this study are two-fold: to clarify the characteristics of breakwaters as viewopoints of portscape; to make clear the importance of aesthetic values of heads of breakwaters.
1)In western countries, many breakwaters of ports and harbours have been utilized as promenades and viewpoints for boat watching. Ports of Le Havre, Deluth and Monaco can be named as examples. These facts support the high potentiality of breakwaters as viewpoints of portscape.
2)Shapes of heads of breakwaters in Spain can be classified into nine categories. Unlike in Japan, majority of the heads of breakwaters in Spain is curvilinear. Introduction of curves to the shape of heads of breakwaters can be considered to be closely related with their own charateristics as viewpoitns of portscape.
