Executive Summary

The purpose of this study is to find out rough standards on setting viewpoints of bridges. We thought that people had mainly two kinds of points of view for seeing a bridge. Namely, the one is as one of many factors which are making a picturesque scene as a whole, the other is as a fabnric which is worth seeing in itself. For both points, this study tried to set up rough standards of the visual angle and the angle of incidence. By such standatds, we can know some suitable places to see bridges and can keep these places for citizens, even before bridges are completed.
For the above purpose, on some of Japanese gardens, the visual relation of bridges and walks was examined. And many photographs of bridges which were inserted in the publication for designing of bridges were examined in point of the camera angle. By those examination, we could propose some standards which were concerned with the human visual field and with structural types of bridges.
