Executive Summary A front-open type drag head has been developing as one of the effective methods to remove soft mud layers at sea bottom. In this report, the dredging characteristics of the drag head is discussed through the field test by trailing hopper dredge SEIRYU MARU with a dead weight of 3,202 tons and a hopper capacity of 1,754m3, and which is owned by the Ministry of Transport. The average moisture content of the sea bottom was 220% and the stabilizer with a surface area of 7 m2 was equipped to the front-open type drag head used here. The main purpose of the use is to gain a constant cutting depth without over-cuts against mud layers by connecting with the use of swell compensator. Throughout the test, the data concerning the dredging characteristics such as a slurry concentration, a volume of mud dredged and a pump caccum were measured vontinuously with the movement of the head with/without the stabilizer.
