Executive Summary

Touch zone of runway suffers abrasion action by the wheels of landing airplane. The purpose of this paper is to examine the degree of damage of pavement caused by friction between wheels of the plane and the pavement. A new abrasion tester for paving materials was manufactured to reproduce experimentally the abrasion pohenomenon. The mechanism of this tester is as follows: a rotating wheel whose perimeter velocity is 200 kilometers per hour gives the resting specimen the action of abrasion, and the loading pressure and period of the wheel to the specimens were made of asphalt concrete in which several factors were changed for each specimen, such as properties of asphalt, asphalt content, grading of coarse aggregate and so forth. From abrasion tests, abrasion process was investigated and the relations between abrasion and factors mentioned above were discussed.
