Executive Summary

 The suitablness of soundiing methods and the relations between the recordings of soundaings and the unconfined compressive strengths qu were investigated for the alluvial clay stratums in the harbour districts.
 In this work, conventional sounding methods such as standard penetration tests, skymeter tests and several static cone penetration tests were used.
 These results suggest that;
 1) There are much cases that the standard penetration test is not applicable if qu is under than 1 kg/cm2, and the old proposals of N/qu is undesrestimation for qu.
 2) The sounding resistances of other static methods roughly equal to 5 qu irrespective of the testing mothods.
