Executive Summary

On the planning and designing of pedestrian space in the waterfront area, which consists of the roads for pedestrians, people who use wheelchairs or bicycles on the waterside and connecting roads between the waterside and the urban backyard of them, the planning and designing method should be established to consider amenity for people who visit the waterfront. On the standing point that the space should be improved to be good amenity and be enjoyed parmanently by the people, we have carried out the research on the method with a questionnaire to domestic port authorities, analyzed the answers, and extracted the some problems of existing facilities, which are as follows; 1)In the case of connecting roads, there are some cases that the pedestrian space is separated from the motor lanes by thick tree-planting band. Other cases are all non-separated type. In either case, the connecting road for pedestrians is located parallel with moter lanes. It shows that road plan for moter traffic is a precondition on the planning of pedestrian road. It is to be hoped that amenity for the people is considered in the first stage of port planning. 2)In the sectional forms of pedestrian space on the waterside, there are some improvements of high-wall parapets and revetments in order to open the waterside for people. On the other hand, the same kind of step-type revetment is adopted even to the different terrain waterside. 3)On the designing of interior space, there is a tendency that several materials on the same face, complicated details and the imitations of the nature are adopted.
