Field Performance Test Analysis of a Pile Driving Control System Using Laser Doppler Velocimeter

Executive Summary

The 5th District Port Construction Bureau, Ministry of Transport has developed a practical control system of pile driving work which is able to Dmeasure the behaviour of pile under execution contactless by a laser Doppler velocimeter.  This paper describes the examined result of the measuring performance and accuracy based on the field data gained throught on-land and offshore test. From the both side of equipmentsand data-processing, we estimated and investigated some problems in automating the control system of pile driving work. (1)The set measured by visual inspection in on-land work is accurate and stable. The error is within 1mm compared with the transit. The accuracy of the developed the control system is one-half of visual inspection. (2)The accuracy of visual inspection at sea work is half of that of on-land work. The accuracy of developed system at sea work is almost the same as visual inspection. (3)The set and elastic rebound measured by the developed system is larger than those of visual inspection. One of the reason is that the duration of the set calculation of the developed system is longer than actual hitting time. The other is that elastic rebound measured by visual inspection is smaller than the actual value because of traceability and read out accuracy. (4)The developed system is able to automate total process of the control of pile driving work from the beginning to the end.  Result of these tests, this pile driving control system using laser doppler velocimeter has enough performance to gather the all data of pile driving control. Also, this system is able to automate the total cont-rol of pile driving work.
