Executive Summary

Recently net volume of international transportation by container cargoes has been increasing rapidly to 32 million TEU of the world-wide transportation in 1993. This sum of 32 million TEU includes 7.4 million TEU of the transportation between Asian and North American countries, 4.6 million between Asian and European countries, and 5 million in-between Asian countries. According to the statistic, about 80% of the world-wide transportation are come in and out between or in-between the Asian, North American and European countries. This statistics also shows the net volume of 17 million TEU are come in and out Asian countries, which comes out more than 50% of the world-wide transportation by the container cargoes.
However, since structural analysis on the transportation in-between Asian countries is not conducted in detail, any detailed in-vestigations on the future trend
of Japanese container transportation have not been conducted. Therefore in this paper a vision of Japanese marine transportation of the 21 century is investigate
d by the detailed studies on the container transportation in Asian countries. As the results of the studies, two plans for Japanese marine transportation are described in the paper, the construction of the net-work systems of the container transportation in Asia with close relations of CALS, and construction of high speed container transportation system connecting the North American and European countries with Asian countries.
