Executive Summary

This report presents the damages to port traffic facilities in Kobe Port and Amagasaki-Nishinomiya-Ashiya Port due to Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake on 17 January 1995. The port traffic facilities include several bridges and elevated roads of Harbor Highway, two new transit systems: Port Liner and Rokko Liner, and Nishinomiya Oohashi Bridge.
The damages observed in these facilities are rupture of connecting bolts and bearing supports and collapse and inclination of piers. Comparatively heavy damages have been appeared in the region between the man-made Port Island and Maya pier.
Although we need further detailed investigation and examination to draw conclusions, huge horizontal forces and liquefaction of the base ground can be considered as the principal reasons to cause these damages.
