Executive Summary

The limit state design method tends to be used for reinforced concrete structurtes is most of the countries, for it is more rational than the allowable stressmethod.
We have been using the allowable stress method for the design of the port facilities and have gained good experiences. Under such circumstances, however, the adoption of the limit state design method for the port facilities is strongly required.
The author examines the applicability of the limit state design method to the port facilities. For the purpose, he estimates the adequate values of safety factors and characteristic values for port structures such as caisson type breakwaters, quaywalls, and open-type piers.
The way to design reinforced concrete port structures by using the limit state design method is presented in this paper.
