Executive Summary

Field measurements of longshore current have been carried out at Hazaki Oceanographical Research Facility (HORF)with a float when waves broke over bars. The calibration of this measurement method was conducted with an electromagnetic current meter. The locations of maximum longshore current velocities over the bars and the troughs are investigated.
A numerical model for nearshore current in the surf zone has been developed with the consideration of the momentum fluxes due to mass transport under bores. The nearshore currents when the nearshore topographies around the HORF are known are calculated, and are compared with the measured values.
A wave height transformation model for directional random waves in the surf zone has been also developed for the calculation of driving forces of nearshore current such as radiation stresses. The significant wave heights calculated by the present model are compared with the measured ones.
