Executive Summary

Data of embankments damaged by big earthquakes occurred from the Kanto earthquake to the 1983 Nihonkai-Chubu Earthquake were collected and reached the total of 734 sites. A failure mode of a half collected data was a top failure of slope, and a damage level of a half collected data was slight. Fifty three sites of the co
llected data that included 4 sites of no damage were selected for a circular arc analysis to investigate a dynamic stability of embankments. The circular arc analysis in consideration of seismic coefficient and excess pore pressure estimated by ground earthquake response calculations was conducted for these sites. According to this analysis it was concluded that the dynamic stability of the embankment on the saturated sand layers can be investigated by the circular arc analysis that considers the seismic coefficient and the excesspore pressures.
