Executive Summary

On the occasion of waterfront road planning, it is essential to forecast a design traffic volume. Calculation of the design traffic volume shoud be in accordance with formula set by Technical Standard for Port an Harbour Facilities in Japan. According to the Standards, the design traffic volume can be calculated from a cargo volume multiplied by several indices. Values of these indices, however. are not given on the Standards. Planners have to conduct a field survey, or refer to similar instances to get the values of the indices whenever needed.
 In this study, two indices, namely ralated vehicle rate and hourly variation, are presented by analyzing the data obtained through traffic survey in waterfront zones in 1985. Major findings are summarized as follows;
1)Higher values of the related vehicle rate are frequently observed in/around wharves with heavy traffic than those generally admitted in port planning.
2)Values of hourly variation have a tendency to fall as the traffic volume increases.
