Executive Summary

 Based on shaking table tests, the authors have proposed a new aseismic design method using spring-solid cell model for the embedded steel plate cellular bulkhead. In order to verify the design method, measurements of the dynamic of the dynamic behavior of the actural structure under earthquake conditions have been performed at Wakayama from 1984.
 Major results are as follows;
1)The predominant mode of cell in earthquakes is rocking, and its first natural frequency is about 2Hz.
2)The distributions of front earth pressure and bottom reaction measured in earthquakes are close to those of rocking mode of the cell. These facts assure the fundamental assumption of the new design method.
3)The analytical method using the modified FLUSH gives good agreement with measured resutls. Therefore, this method is useful for evaluating the earthquake behavior of steel plate cellular bulkheads.
4)Earth pressure calculated by the new design method gives safety side values comparing with measured values. Therefore, the design method can be practicable to evaluate the earthquake stability of steel plate cellular bulkheads.
