Executive Summary

In order to make clear the dynamic behavior of steel sheet pile cellular bulkheads, two kinds of shaking table tests were carried out on model cells with 50 cm in diameter; one is resonant tests for single cells and another is failure tests for walls. As a structural difference of sheet pile cells to plate cells is existence of joitns, the tests were mainly intended to evaluate the extent of influence on dynamic behavior of the cellular structures. Major resutls are as follows ; 1)Under the strong ground motions, the existence of joints gives no significant difference on the deformation of shape of cells and the displacement of walls, and it is considered that the cells behave like rigid body. 2)The existence of the joints has some extent of influence on ground reactions against cells. Although larger strains possibly occurred in fills of sheet pile cells, the failure due to shear did not happen in any models. 3)The existence of joints do not have any influence on the inertia force acting on cell fills during vibration. 4)Judging from the model tests in this study, a curernt method for evaluating an earthquake stability of sheet pile cellular bulkheads gives rather conservative results, and this tendency increases with increase of embedment.
