Executive Summary

Wave power is converted into electric power by a 1/3 model of pneumatic-type wave power converter. The converter includes a wave-power-extracting caisson (air chamber area of 6m2), a 16 blades wells turbine (diameter of 0.673m), an electric generator (rated power of 1kW) and 24V battery.
The system is designed by the design method based on the thermodynamics and wave-kinematic theory. The system works as predicted in the experiments with regular and irregular waves in a large wave channel.
Protective devices for the converter are also designed and tested in the wave channel, namely the air release valve, the pressure release valve and the emergency valve. The air release valve is another opening which releases the air power from the air chamber. The pressure release valve is a kind of air release valve, but works accoridng to the pressure inside the air chamber of the caisson. The emergency valve closes the turbine opening and simultaneously opens the emergency opening, when the water surface level in the chamber goes up to the turbine or the other emergency occurs. The functions of the valves are discussed according to the test results.
