Study on the Change of Cargo Flow and Economical Losses Caused by Earthquake

Executive Summary

 In the northern part of Japan, a large unexpected earthquake,. so called Nihonkai-Chubu Earthquake, occurred on May 26, 1983.
 The port facilities are hardly damaged in the port of Akita. The flow of cargo throught the port had to be changed by a reduction of cargo handling ability of the port. The industries, which usually use the port, made reactions to minimize the economical losses.
 In this report, the economical losses in these industries are estimated in following three items;
 1) It is clarified that the generating procedure of economical losses is different by the change patterns of cargo flow.
 2) Investigation way for the estimation of economical losses followed by the above process.
 3) According to this way, the economical losses in industories are estimated on the port of Akita.
 The economical losses mounted up 200 million Yen from May to October 1983.
