Executive Summary

As a test method to evaluate the disturbance of sampled soils, the study on the radiographic test has been carried out for soils in the sampling tubes. The soil conditions in the sampling tubes seem to have many patterns, which are classifed into 13 patterns by X-ray photos from the radiographic test. Comparing these patterns with the causes of distubance of samples, it is found that the radiographic test is a very useful method for the evaluation of the disturbance of soils. Moreover, as a quantitative estimation of X-ray photos, the relationships among the relative density, the unit weight and the density of the X-ray films are obtained by introducing an idea of the equivalent thickness of the sampling tube. Finally, as an example of the quantitative evaluation of the radiographic test, it is shown that the cracks in the specimens, which are found by X-ray photos and visual observation, affect the distribution of the unconfined compression strength to the depth of subsoils.
