Executive Summary

The investigation for the earthquake-proof design of the trench type subaqueous tunnel has been made by following three kinds of methods ; the 1st is response analysis using an electronic computer. In this method multidgree system is substituted for the tunnel and the foundation. The 2nd is the static design method using design spectra. The last is the dynamic model test, in which the experimental response of a model on reduced scale for the earthquake inputs is analyzed using the vibration table.
The response analysis using computer and the dynamic model test are in a sense the same kind of methods, and on the whole there is good correspondence between the results from these methods.
The static design method using design spectra is convenient and easy to calculate, but needs more investigations for practical use. In comparison with the response analysis using computer, this method makes a fairly large difference in results.
