Executive Summary
The structural design method of asphalt concrete pavements for roads, airports and so on is based on CBR method which has been developed mainly on much-experience. However, CBR method cannot fully cope with design of asphalt pavements in the present condition where various kinds of materials have been used for base courses and the structures of base courses have been complicated by the intensification of traffic load condition and the shortage of good granular materials. So it is not always a reasonable design method. It is estimated that the structural design of asphalt pavements in the future will be done mainly on the basis of theoretical way-for example, the theory of multi-layer elastic system.
A large electric computer is necessary for determing the streses, strains and deflections in a elastic system. This paper proposes a new method in which all valu of the stresses, strains and deflections in a multi-layer elastic system under plural uniform circular loads are approximately computed with a pen and a slide rule. We can easily examine the suitability of pavements having plural loads and complicated structures by using this method of approximate computation.
