Executive Summary

This paper discusses the result of the dynamic model test which has been done in the West Center Pier, Port of Kinuura, in 1970 fiscal year, for the purpose that the earthquake reistive design method applied to the trench type subaqueous tunnel constructed in the Port of Kinuura is to be certified reasonable.
Response deflection and strain of models to propagating waves ganerated by the special S-wave generator were measured. Models made of vinyl chrolide pipe were burried in the artificial embankment made of fine sand. Dimensions of models and the embankment were as follows; pipes of φ630mm×t20mm×l14m were used as a single section model and a double section model by combining two of above mentioned pipe, and the embankement was 1.5m high, 10m wide and 23m long.
According to the test reuslt, the resonant vibration of the tunnel to an earthquake will not play any important role from the earthquake resistive design point of view, and the behavior of tunnels during an earthquake can be represented by a static treatment with the assumption for the tunnel to be a beam in an elastic medium, provided that the ground deformation during an earthquake is assumed or known.
