Executive Summary

 It is important to have the knowledge of the wave direction characteristics of coastal waves for understanding of coastal phenomena and consequently for the planning and design of coastal works.
 Since 1960, an effort to develop a new wave direction meter which can be used for long term field observation, has been made in our laboratory. The apparatus was tried several times in field observation, and it has proved to have enough accuracy in finding the direction of coastal waves.
 The following are discussed in this report;
a)Process of the development,
b)Principle of observation and structure,
c)An outline of the results of the hydraulic model experiments,
d)Method of calibration and sample records of the field observation,
e)Method of analysis of the record.
