Executive Summary

An extensive literature survey was made on prestressed concrete pavements for airports in foreign countries as well as in Japan. Prestressing methods, design theories and structural features of pavement slabs, joints and abutments were reviewed and evaluated based on the published data of theoretical and experimental analysis and field observations. The results were summarized to present valuable informations necessary for formulation of recommended practices for prestressed concrete pavement design for airports, in which the authors suggest the various coefficients to be substituted into the established formulas for stress analysis, proper combinations of stresses to be considered, the optimum prestress to be introduced and allowable stresses of concrete and steel. Also the structural devices of prestressing methods, joints and abutments were illustrated with typical examples in the actual works. Along with the literature survey theoretical and experimental studies were carried out on the so-called blowup phenomena of pavement slab due to temperature rise to confirm that it did not present serious problems under the practical conditions in Japan.
