Executive Summary

Details of the triaxial compression apparatus of the Imperial College type is reported. With this apparatus, consolidated undrained compression tests are performed on saturated clays. The undrained strength of saturated clays can be calculated using strength parameters c',φ' in terms of effective stress and pore pressure coefficient at failure Af, which are obtained by the consolidated undrained test with pore pressure measurement. Comparison of the calculated undrained strength with those measured by uniconfined compression tests in the field shows that the agreement is satisfactory in the rate of increase in strength with depth, but it is not good enough in the magnitude of strength itself.
The effect of remoulding on the value of strength parameters in terms of effective stress is also investigated. The data are not much, however, they seem to ind icate that the value of φ' is not affected by remoulding.
