Spatiotemporal slip distribution of the March 16, 2022, M7.4 Off Fukushima Prefecture earthquake The spatiotemporal slip distribution of the March 16, 2022, Off Fukushima Prefecture earthquake was estimated by waveform inversion with empirical Green's functions. Ground motion records of the March 19 0:58 aftershock (MJ=5.0) and the March 27 22:54 aftershock (MJ=4.7) were used as empirical Green's functions. Conventional least-squares linear waveform inversion (Hartzell and Heaton, 1983) was adopted. A 40 km by 20 km fault plane including the JMA hypocenter (141.622E, 37.697N, depth=57 km) was assumed with strike and dip angles of 15 and 42 degrees, respectively. The first-time-window triggering front was assumed to start from the JMA hypocenter and to propagate radially at a constant velocity of 2.0 km/s. At each subfault, the moment rate function after passage of the rupture front was expressed as a convolution of an impulse train with the moment rate function of the aftershock (Nozu, 2007). The impulse train spanned for 3.0 seconds and consisted of 12 impulses at equal time intervals of 0.25 seconds. Thus the height of each impulse corresponds to the ratio of the moment release during each 0.25 second at each subfault with respect to the moment of the aftershock. The ratio was determined through the inversion. Conventional corrections for the geometrical spreading and time shifts (Irikura, 1983) were applied to the empirical Green's functions to represent arrivals from different subfaults. The shear wave velocity in the source region was assumed to be 4.46 km/s. Absolute time information for both the mainshock and the aftershock recordings was used. The moment release at each subfault at each time window relative to the aftershock moment determined by the inversion is listed below. For j=1-8, the moment is relative to the moment of the March 19 0:58 aftershock (MJ=5.0).
