Engineering Seismology Group

It is important to control damage to port and airport facilities due to coming Tokai earthquakes and other anticipated earthquakes. There are two technologies with principal importance toward this goal: one is the technology to predict earthquake ground motions for scenario earthquakes and the other is the technology to predict response of facilities. Engineering Seismology Division is mainly in charge of the development of the former technology, based on evidences such as strong motion records.

The technology to predict earthquake ground motions started to be used only recently and it is not necessarily very familiar to practitioners in the field of civil engineering. It is, however, very essential for the safety of facilities and their uses. I sincerely hope that the technology will become just a part of civil engineering (just like standard penetration test is a part of civil engineering) and come to be used by practitioners all over Japan and other countries with high seismicity.
