The 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011, has caused devastating tsunami disasters on huge coastal areas in eastern Japan. As a research institute investigating disaster mitigation, we were very shocked. Wondering of the effects of what we have had done till now, we are facing the results of disaster sincerely.
Every effort is now being made all over Japan to recover the damaged areas, and our institute is now tackling with the technical challenges shown below.

  1. Reinvestigation of the mitigation strategy against extraordinary coastal disasters of which the return periods are about 1,000 years.
  2. Improvement of the real-time tsunami observation system and development of the reliable warning system.
  3. Preparation against possible huge disasters including those in western Japan.
