Large Geotechnical and Hydro-dynamic Centrifuge(LGHC)

Plate boundary fault movement generates both earthquake motion and tsunami wave. Generally, tsunami wave velocity of about 200m/s at the sea depth of 4000m is slower than shear wave velocity of about 2000–3000m/s in solid rock. Coastal facilities and structures are first damaged by the earthquake motion and their damages extend with tsunami subsequently, decreasing their protection performance against sea waves.

The Large Geotechnical and Hydro-dynamic Centrifuge (LGHC) can reproduce in-situ environment of coastal structures during brunt of earthquake and tsunami, with small scale model. It consists of the shake table, flume and water wave generator in the centrifuge frame of 3.5m in effective radius. Using LGHC, earthquake vibration and tsunami wave are successively applied to the model under the centrifugal acceleration field.
