Hazaki Oceanographical Research Center

波崎海洋観測施設(茨城県神栖市)

Hazaki Oceanographical Research Center has the research pier in 427 meters long on sandy beach facing to the Pacific Ocean. This pier is the only facilities in Japan to observe the surf zone. The surf zone is the area between the wave breaking point and the limit of wave uprush on a beach, where a large mount of sediments is transported by action of waves and wave-induced nearshore currents.

Dimensions

Pier length 427 meters
Pier deck height 7 meters above LWL
Tip of water depth 5.5 meters
Steel piles diameter 0.8 meter

観測用桟橋

The signals from the seven wave gages on the pier deck are sampled and analyzed in real time to have the wave characteristics. Wind velocities, wind directions, water temperature, and atmospheric pressure are monitored.

桟橋上から観測

Beach profiles from the tip of pier to the backshore are measured with intervals of 5 meters once a week. The manual observations of surface current, wave approach angle, breaker wave height, breaking type, breaking position and shoreline position are carried out every week.
